AFEdemy role in the project:

AFEdemy’s task in the project is to develop a curriculum and trainer manual, and to safeguard the sustainability of the project.
The curriculum will address core issues related to creating dementia-friendly cultural activities. The aim is to create an innovative curriculum for dementia-friendly artistic and cultural expression that will enhance the quality of life of people suffering from dementia. The development of this curriculum will involve active collaboration with older people living with dementia and their caregivers, both formal and informal.
The trainer manual will include a detailed explanation on how the training content can be used to train (in)formal caregivers, artists, and other key stakeholders within the cultural domain to develop dementia-friendly cultural activities. It will feature suggestions for different learning formats including the learning content such as workshops, online seminars, face-to-face presentations, or self-paced learning.

Description

The Memorable project aims to foster a dementia-friendly society by training volunteers, (in)formal caregivers, artists, and cultural stakeholders to make cultural institutions accommodating for people with dementia. It will develop educational materials to raise awareness and provide skills for creating dementia-friendly cultural spaces.

From the literature (Strohmaier et al., 202, Zeilig et al., 2014, it is known that arts-based interactions with people with dementia have positive effects on specific aspects of wellbeing. This also strongly connects to the „UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030)“ launched in December 2020. It states that social exclusion – in the same way as discrimination and ageism – can have significant negative effects on the health and well-being of older people. The Memorable project will help to give people ownership of their health outcomes and build on harnessing existing resources in the community, such as the existing museums, theatres, cultural and artificial expression opportunities. This community approach improves the social inclusion of people with dementia and their loved ones.

Objectives

  • To develop educational materials to equip volunteers, (in)formal carers, artists and other stakeholders within the cultural domain with the right skills and knowledge on how to raise awareness of the importance of dementia-friendly cultural institutions and how to develop or change them.
  • To set up an international network of experts focused on raising awareness and exchanging expertise and experiences on dementia-friendly cultural practices in the EU.
